European football’s chief has accused Boris Johnson of fuelling racism.
The world is finally waking up to the bigotry of a Tory leader hoping to scaremonger and lie his way back into Downing Street.
UEFA President Aleksander Ceferin’s astonishing criticism is justified as the Prime Minister’s crude insults mocking people because of the colour of their skin are shameful.
Mr Johnson’s lack of contrition reinforces the belief that he is a cynical politician prepared to get dirty in the gutter to win votes from unpleasant reactionaries. He is a valueless figure without moral boundaries.
Football must do much more to stamp out the racism staining the game, as UEFA’s head acknowledges, yet Mr Johnson needs to apologise for his own bad behaviour and pledge never to repeat it before he lectures others.
Racism in football feeds on wider racism in society so Mr Johnson has played a poisonous role in fermenting prejudice by appearing to legitimise the unacceptable.
Please dig deep
Homelessness is traumatic for everybody afflicted but particularly children as it ruins what should be some of the happiest days of their lives.
As we reveal on page 26, Shelter say that 135,000 of them will spend Christmas living in temporary accommodation.
This year’s Daily Mirror Christmas appeal is intended to help ensure every child enjoys hot meals and receives a present to open on the 25th, spreading joy to victims of Tory austerity.
We love that our generous readers with a social conscience will support families less fortunate than their own. Please dig deep.
Ego has landed
America’s worst President has landed and we must tell him loud and clear to keep his grubby little hands off our NHS.
Donald Trump is an America-first nationalist whose idea of a special relationship is abusing Britain as a second class country.
The orange prickly ego is no friend of ours.
