John Conyers Jr., who represented Michigan in Congress for additional than five many years, has died at the age of 90. His demise was verified Sunday by the Wayne County Medical Examiner’s Office in Detroit.

Conyers was the longest-serving African American lawmaker in congressional background, a co-founder of the Congressional Black Caucus and a fierce champion for civil legal rights. But he would depart business office at the age of 88 amid allegations of sexual harassment.

Conyers is survived by his wife, a brother and two sons.
