Hey everyone. Well it has been two years since you elected me to be your representative for Alberta at the CAAMP board of directors and my term is up. That does not mean that I am done by any stretch of the imagination. It just means that I need to run for re-election and that, my friends is where I need your help. Let me give you a brief recap of what we have done in the last couple of years and more importantly what I hope to help the association accomplish in the next couple of years.

One of the reasons that I originally ran for a board seat was because the year I ran was the year that we (CAAMP) were to review our five year strategic plan and I really wanted to be a part of it. You can read my original reasons for running here. So let’s talk about a few of the things that I think are real milestones that we, as a board have accomplished during my term:
Our strategic plan update looked at the following areas:
- Membership/Broker Councils/Associations
- Government relations
- Communications/Social Media
- What is CAAMP
- Alternative revenues
We accomplished a lot on all fronts and I could spend hours regaling you with all the details but I will just point out a couple of things that I think are significant.
What is CAAMP?
For me a lot of ‘what’ we do starts with ‘Who’ we are so lets start with that. We really beat up and revisited the question of who (or What) is CAAMP and we made some slight but significant modifications to our vision. As a board we discussed whether we represented the “Industry” or the “Broker Channel” and concluded that our vision was “To be recognized as the premier voice of Canada’s mortgage broker channel and the leading authority on mortgage issues.” We represent the Broker Channel. This means all of the players. Lenders, Insurers and Brokers that participate in our channel. This deliberately excludes those in the mortgage industry that do NOT play in the Broker Channel and I believe this is an important distinction. I could discuss this at length so if you would like to chat more about this please contact me directly.
This one is near and dear to my heart and one that I put a lot of time and energy on during my term on the board. As you are hopefully aware we have made some significant enhancements to the AMP designation to really drive this forward as the pre-eminent designation for the mortgage broker. The significant changes that we made and that I pushed hard for were:
- The AMP is now a Mortgage Broker Only designation
- The experience requirements have been changed to not only include time in the business but also require a minimum amount of mortgages originated (or supervised in the case of compliance or management staff).
- A national proficiency exam must be completed to qualify for the designation
Not only did we make these decisions as a board but the absolutely amazing staff (and I mean AMAZING, pick up the phone and say hi kinda amazing) at CAAMP have implemented these changes. I have worked with the staff to ensure the curriculum is relevant and topical also helping to connect many of you with staff so we received a broad perspective on the changes that were being made.
Alberta Broker Council
For the past two years I have had the privilege of Chairing the Alberta Broker council to make certain that we get more engagement from our constituents. This has been extremely rewarding as I have had the opportunity to meet and discuss important issues with some great minds in our channel.
I have had the pleasure of working with our communications committee as we enhanced CAAMP’s online and social media presence. We are continuing to move forward implementing new communications initiatives to better connect with you, our members.
Long Story Short (Kinda)
I am realizing as I type that I could almost write a book about all the wonderful things that your CAAMP board and staff have been working on and achieving in the last two years so I will cut to the chase. Why am I seeking your support for re-election?
- We still have a lot of work to do with initiatives that I helped start and I want to make sure we finish
We have set the stage for a very prosperous future for our organization and channel with what we done leading up to today but the devil is in the details and implementation is the key. I need to be a part of that implementation.
- We need strong broker representation on the board.
Our membership is about 80% broker based yet our board is closer to 60% broker represented. That is something I want to see get stronger not weaker.
- We have a real opportunity in the next few years to make a real impact on our channel and I believe that I can make a real contribution.
I have been a licensed broker for over 20 years now (I know, holy crap is he old). I have seen many perspectives on our channel and I can bring a unique perspective. I have worked as a mortgage originator and top producer, I have also seen it from a management side of the coin. I have worked with our provincial association, our regulator as well as CAAMP to continue to try and raise the bar in our channel. And while we have come a very long way we still have more to do.
- We need to bring all of our industry stakeholders closer together.
Lenders, Insurers, Brokers, Provincial Associations all need to work better together to grow our market share and become more efficient at what we do. I believe that I am well qualified to help make this happen.
