Broker Channel Change: It starts with ‘Why’

If you haven’t had a chance to watch Simon Sinek’s TED talk you really should.  You can watch the full 18 minute video here.  In his talk he does an excellent job of summarizing the importance of ‘why’.  I thought I would take a minute to talk a little bit about why we do what we do.  This concept is not new.  The philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche said:

“He who has a why to live can bear almost any how”

In other words, if you have a strong enough why, you can keep moving forward no matter how challenging the road ahead.  For me, the “Why” in our industry is because I truly believe that we are important to our market place.  I believe that mortgage brokers are an integral part of the mortgage market in Canada and without us consumers would have higher prices, less choices and inferior service offerings.  I believe that it is a travesty that we, as mortgage brokers only hold about 28% market share.  I believe that we have a superior product and offering to that of our competition and I believe we are significantly under performing our collective potential.  I believe that that one person can make a difference.  I also believe that we can collectively raise the bar and level of consumer experience in the hands of a mortgage broker.

I believe that you can make a difference but you need to take action and find a way to contribute.  Share a thought in the comments below, get involved with one of our professional associations, commend a colleague on a job well done or simply strive to be better at what you do.

There are many others that continue to step up and assist if you know of an unsung hero in our channel please take a minute to acknowledge them here.
